Protest against Expansion of Croatian Mussels Pans

Ljubljana, Nov. 7

The Foreign Ministry addressed a note to the Croatian embassy in Ljubljana, protesting the expansion of a Croatian mussels breeding facility further towards the middle of the disputed Piran Bay. Stressing that such actions are in violation of the Slovenian-Croatian agreement on border co-operation and transport, the ministry said it expects Croatian authorities to take action to restore the previous state of the facility. The note comes in response to reports that a Croatian fishing co-operative expanded a mussels farm that has already been the subject of disputes, located in the middle of the Piran Bay where the state border has yet to be been determined. The news has also provoked a harsh reaction from Slovenian opposition parties. Slovenia's permanent mission at the UN meanwhile, submitted to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, a diplomatic note in which Slovenia responds to Croatia's notification of the ecological and fisheries protection zone in the Adriatic.
