Bilateral Co-operation

EEZ Discussed as Norwegian PM Visits Slovenia

Brdo pri Kranju, Oct. 29

Bilateral issues topped the agenda as Norwegian PM Kjell Magne Bondevik paid a visit to Slovenia, yet the recent tensions between Slovenia and Croatia were also debated. Bondevik stressed after meeting his Slovenian counterpart Anton Rop that Norway has an exclusive economic zone, which it declared in agreement with its neighbours. The issue, which is topical in the wake of Croatia's unilateral declaration of an ecological and fisheries zone in the Adriatic that has angered Slovenia and raised tensions between the two countries, was brought up by Rop, who said that Norway had declared the zone in a "European way". Bondevik also announced that his country would open an embassy in Ljubljana on 1 December, and pledged that Norway would spur all sides involved in the current blockade of the enlargement of the European Economic Area - Liechtenstein decided for the measure because of a denationalisation dispute with the Czech Republic and Slovakia - to find an agreement.
