No Call-Up for October Recruits

Ljubljana, Sep. 4

The October generation of recruits for mandatory military service are not expected to be called up, according to unofficial information. Should the call-up not be issued, this will in fact mean the end of obligatory military services for Slovenian men. As a result, those wishing to serve in the Slovenian Armed Forces in the future will have to be professionals. Furthermore, citizens aged between 18 and 27 will be able to enrol in a three-month voluntary military training programme. This recruitment-training scheme has been available since a decree to that effect came into force on September 2. Under Slovenian law, the Ministry of Defence can still call up recruits until the end of June 2004, yet if the October generation is not issued a call-up, this becomes merely a theoretical possibility.
